Boveda is an American brand that makes two-way humidity control packs: a single pack that releases moisture when the air in a sealed container gets too dry, and absorbs moisture when it gets too humid. The pack contains a mix of natural salts and purified water, sealed in a non-toxic, food-safe wrapper, and holds the relative humidity around a fixed level, in this case 69%.
A stable humidity level of around 69% prevents two problems at once. Herbs that are too dry become brittle, lose aroma and burn hotter and faster; herbs that are too humid risk developing mould. The 8-gram pack is the smallest size in the Boveda range, so it's suited to small, sealed containers or travel-sized storage boxes rather than a large bulk container.
Use and maintenance
Place the pack together with your herbs in an airtight container, for example a CVault (click here for the product). Use only one humidity level per container: combining a 69% pack with a pack of a different level, or with a humidity control product from another brand, makes them work against each other instead of together. Depending on how humid or dry the environment is, a pack typically lasts 2 to 4 months. Once the pack feels mostly hard instead of soft and pliable, it has released most of its moisture and it's time for a new one.
