The BTR M76 rear axle (and associated differential) is a legendary and primal axle originally manufactured by BTR Automotive in Australia (formerly part of BorgWarner).

Because of its ruggedness and compact construction, this particular axle has become especially well known in the world of niche, hand-built British sports cars and Australian powerhouses. In particular, the axle has been used under the following cars:

1. Morgan Motor Company

Morgan switched to the BTR M76 axle in the late 1990s to replace the older Salisbury axles. You can find the M76 under the following models:

  • Morgan Plus 8 (models from the late 1990s to about 2004)

  • Morgan Roadster (the early V6 models)

  • Morgan 4/4 Sports

  • Morgan Aero 8 (the early generations, Mk1 and Mk2)

2. TVR

TVR widely used the BTR M76 axle for their rear-wheel-drive sports cars built between 1997 and 2005. They came with both a regular "open" differential and the well-known, optional Hydratrak limited slip differential. Among others, the axle is found in the:

  • TVR Chimaera (later models from about 1996/1997 onwards)

  • TVR Griffith (later years of production)

  • TVR Cerbera (both the V8 and Speed Six variants)

  • TVR Tuscan (early generations)

  • TVR T350

  • TVR Tamora

3. Australian models (Ford & Holden).

Because BTR was an Australian manufacturer, the M75/M76/M78 axle collection formed the backbone of the local automotive industry. The M76 architecture (often as an independent rear suspension, or IRS) was used in:

  • Ford Falcon (6-cylinder models of the 1990s)

  • Holden Commodore (the VN through VS series, especially the 6-cylinders)
