Muira puama, botanically Ptychopetalum olacoides, is a small tree from the Amazon rainforest whose root and woody stem have long been used in traditional Brazilian medicine. The nickname "potency wood" (also "marapuama") refers to its traditional use against fatigue and as an aphrodisiac. European herbal trade picked up muira puama as early as the nineteenth century, and from the 1930s onward it was actively marketed in Europe as a natural aphrodisiac.
Scientific research on muira puama in humans is limited, and the results are inconsistent: there is no solid clinical evidence confirming an aphrodisiac effect. Most available research has been done in animal models, for example looking at effects on memory. We therefore present muira puama as a herb with a long tradition of use, not as a product with a proven effect.
Use
Follow the recommended daily dose printed on the packaging and don't exceed it. Muira puama is typically used as a short course, not as a long-term daily supplement. If you take medication or have health issues, talk to a doctor or pharmacist first. Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Storage
Store the jar somewhere dry, cool and dark, out of reach of children, and check the expiry date on the packaging.
