 In de Aljechin lokt zwart de witte pionnen naar voren, om ze vervolgens in dynamische situaties onderuit te willen halen. Veel creatieve grootmeesters gebruiken deze scherpe opening af en toe, zoals Short, Ivanchuk en ook Magnus Carlsen. Timothy Taylor wil in dit boek geen catalogus van mogelijkheden weergeven, maar richt zich op een praktisch repertoire voor zwart. Dit is het eerste repertoireboek over deze opening.

Taylor schreef eerder de populaire boeken Bird's Opening en The Budapest Gambit.
