The Fiat C510 is one of the most iconic and longest-produced 5-speed manual transmissions from the Fiat Group (FPT – Fiat Powertrain Technologies).

Introduced in the 1980s and refined over decades, this transmission was designed for cars with a transverse engine (front-wheel drive) and medium-to-high torque (up to approximately $200text{--}230 text{ Nm}$). The transmission is known for being compact and relatively lightweight, yet surprisingly robust. It can be found in a vast array of models from Fiat, Abarth, Alfa Romeo, and Lancia.

The main models in which the C510 transmission is used:

Fiat & Abarth

Within Fiat, the C510 has been the standard transmission for nearly every model with a somewhat larger gasoline or diesel engine (particularly the 1.8 16V, 1.4 Turbos, and the 1.3/1.9 JTDs).

  • Abarth 500 / 595 / 695: (Virtually all manual versions of the spirited 1.4 T-Jet use the C510 transmission)

  • Fiat Punto (Mk1, Mk2, Grande Punto, Evo):

    • Mk1: Punto GT Turbo (133 hp) and the 1.7 TD.

    • Mk2: Punto HGT (1.8 16V) and the 1.9 JTD diesels.

    • Grande Punto / Evo: The 1.3 MultiJet diesels (75 hp / 90 hp variants).

  • Fiat Uno: The later Mk1 and all Mk2 models of the legendary Uno Turbo (i.e., with catalytic converter and the 1.4 Racing).

  • Fiat Coupe: The 1.8 16V (131 hp) and the naturally aspirated 2.0 5-cylinder (147/154 hp).

  • Fiat Barchetta: The 1.8 16V roadster always uses this transmission.

  • Fiat Bravo / Brava / Marea: The 1.8 16V, the 2.0 20V 5-cylinder HGT, and the 1.9 TD/JTD diesels.

  • Fiat Stilo: Paired with the 1.8 16V and the lighter 1.9 JTD (80/100 hp) variants.

  • Fiat Multipla, Doblo & Palio: The versions with the 1.9 JTD or 1.3 MultiJet diesel engines.

Alfa Romeo

Alfa Romeo primarily paired the C510 transmission with their acclaimed Twin Spark (TS) four-cylinder gasoline engines and early JTD diesels:

  • Alfa Romeo 145 / 146 / 147: The 1.4, 1.6, and 1.8 Twin Spark models, as well as the top-of-the-line models (2.0 TS / Quadrifoglio) and the early 1.9 JTDs.

  • Alfa Romeo 155 & 156: The 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0 Twin Spark versions (manual transmission).

  • Alfa Romeo GT: The 1.8 Twin Spark and the 2.0 JTS (direct-injection gasoline).

  • Alfa Romeo GTV & Spider (916): The base engines, namely the 1.8 TS and 2.0 Twin Spark / JTS.

  • Alfa Romeo MiTo: Certain 5-speed versions of the naturally aspirated gasoline and diesel engines.

Lancia

The group’s luxury brand also made good use of this transmission:

  • Lancia Delta (Mk1 & Mk2): The Mk1 1.6 and 1.9 TD. The Mk2 with the 1.8 8V/16V, 2.0 16V, and 1.9 TD.

  • Lancia Dedra & Lybra: Paired with the 1.8 16V and 2.0 20V engines.

  • Lancia Ypsilon & Musa: The versions with the 1.3 MultiJet (70 hp) diesel engine.
