Desmanthus illinoensis: Illinois bundleflower

Desmanthus illinoensis, known as Illinois bundleflower, is a perennial legume native to the central and southeastern United States, growing in rocky prairies, along stream banks, roadsides and waste ground. It has an upright, bushy habit with several stems from the base, usually reaching 1 to 2 metres tall, with finely divided, bipinnate leaves. The small white to greenish-white flowers form round, puffball-like heads, followed by clusters of flat, sickle-shaped seed pods that stay on the plant into winter. Native American children are recorded to have used the dried seed pod clusters as rattles.

In the ethnobotanical literature on ayahuasca analogues, including work by Jonathan Ott and a 1987 study by Thompson et al., the root bark of Desmanthus illinoensis is mentioned as a possible natural source of DMT. Reported levels vary widely: some plants tested around 0.3% DMT in the root bark, while other specimens, sometimes growing right next to them, showed no measurable amount at all. That makes the species unpredictable and not something you can count on as a reliable source of anything. We sell only the seeds, for anyone who wants to grow the plant itself as an unusual perennial or out of botanical interest; the seeds themselves do not contain DMT.

Sowing and growing

Reliable germination needs scarification: lightly sand the hard seed coat or soak the seeds in water for a few hours before sowing. Sow outdoors in well-drained soil in a sunny spot after the last frost. Once established, Desmanthus illinoensis is winter-hardy and fairly drought-tolerant as a perennial.

Storage

Store unused seeds somewhere dry, dark and cool, ideally in a sealed jar or bag, and they will stay viable for several growing seasons.

In the same exotic seeds category, Dutch-Smart also carries Canary Grass and Hyoscyamus Niger.
