Mexican Tarragon 20 grams | Tagetes lucida
Tagetes lucida, or Mexican tarragon, is native to the Sierra Madre mountains of Mexico. It was already used in the rituals of the ancient Aztecs. The Huichol Indians still use it in their ceremonies to induce visions. It has a mild anise aroma and a sweet taste.
What is Mexican Tarragon?
Tagetes lucida is a herb that comes in many different varieties and forms, which, incidentally, are often difficult to distinguish from one another. The flowers are almost always yellow in color, and the plants have five distinct petals. Nearly all Tagetes species have a strong, pungent scent that is sometimes described as “medicinal.” The herb is also sometimes called marigold.
Effects of Tagetes lucida
Tagetes lucida, generally identified as a potent variety of marigold, was first documented by the Aztecs. They used Tagetes lucida in a ritual incense called yyauhtl. This name is derived from the Aztec word ujana, which means “to offer.” In Mexican folklore, this plant is also known today as the “flowers of the dead.” The Mexican Indians attributed many magical properties to Mexican Dragon. One variety was believed to be the manifestation of Xochipilli, the god of psychoactive plants.
Use
Not much is known about the active ingredients and the ideal dosage. Tagetes lucida can be used as tea or in small amounts in cooking. To prepare tea, steep one tablespoon of the herb in hot water for about 10 minutes. Then strain and drink.
