Why wear a face mask when growing mushrooms
Besides bacteria and mould spores on your hands, breath droplets are an often underestimated source of contamination when cultivating mushrooms. Talking, coughing or simply breathing over an open grow kit can be enough to introduce unwanted microbes onto the substrate, especially during inoculation, when the kit stays open for a relatively long time. This elastic face mask covers your nose and mouth during those sensitive steps and is a logical addition to sterile gloves and a clean workspace.
Like the sterile gloves in our range, the mask is meant for single use. The two elastic ear loops hold it in place without you needing to keep adjusting it, leaving your hands free for the actual inoculation or harvesting work.
Use
Put the mask on before opening the grow kit and keep it on until you're finished with the task. Use a new mask for every session; reusing one increases the chance that the mask itself becomes a source of contamination, for example because moisture from your breath builds up inside it. Combine the mask with sterile gloves and work with calm, controlled movements: quick movements stir up dust and spores that should stay away from the substrate. For extra certainty, you can add an isolation gown to the mask and gloves so your clothing doesn't become a source of contamination either.
Storage
Store unused masks dry and packaged, away from dust and direct sunlight, until you need them. Check the packaging before use; if it's damaged, assume the mask is no longer clean enough to use.
