Catnip, TPA alkaloid extract 3%
Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is a perennial herb from the mint family, originally native to Europe and Asia and now found worldwide. The herb contains nepetalactone, along with terpenes and acetic acid. Nepetalactone activates the pheromone receptors of most cats, causing the playful, rolling behaviour catnip is best known for. People have used the herb as a tea for just as long, described in folk medicine as a mild evening herb.
This extract is produced with the TPA method (Total Purified Alkaloids): the alkaloids are isolated through several extraction and purification steps and then dissolved in an ethanol and water base to a concentration of 3%. The result is a clear liquid extract without plant residue, wax or chlorophyll.
Dosage
Start with 5 to 10 drops (about 0.25-0.5 ml) per use and assess your response before increasing the dose.
Use
The extract can be taken sublingually (drops under the tongue) or diluted in a small amount of water; the taste is sharp due to the ethanol content, so diluting makes it more pleasant. The calming effect folk tradition attributes to catnip tea has not been scientifically established. Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Storage
Store the extract cool, dark and upright with the cap closed, out of reach of children and pets. Close the cap tightly after use to prevent the ethanol from evaporating. At Dutch-Smart you will also find catnip as a dried herb, alongside other mild herbs in the relaxation range.
