What is cleansing water?
In spiritual tradition, cleansing water is known as a way to neutralise unwanted energies in people, objects and spaces. The best-known variety is Florida Water: an alcohol-based cologne with citrus notes and floral undertones, widely used in Peruvian shamanic practice. In Hoodoo, voodoo and shamanic traditions it is used in altar rituals, for the energetic cleansing of gemstones and for clearing negative energies after intense ceremonies.
The Soul Sticks cleansing waters differ from traditional Florida Water: they are made with spring water and witch hazel hydrosol, without alcohol, and contain a specific blend of essential oils for each variety. This makes them mild enough to use on the skin and suitable as a room mist without a sharp alcohol smell.
Ingredients and composition
All Soul Sticks cleansing waters consist of four basic ingredients: spring water, witch hazel hydrosol (an astringent plant extract with a mild cleansing effect), essential oils and a botanical mix. The scent and intention differ per variety, but the basic formula stays the same. They are organically formulated products without synthetic additives.
Uses
The most common uses for cleansing water are: as a room spray (diluted with water in a plant mister if you like), added to the water when you mop the floor, as a bath additive for energetic cleansing baths, and as an aura mist by spraying it above your head and over your arms. To cleanse tools and altar objects, dip a cloth in the water and wipe the object with it. Combine it with a burning herb bundle or incense for a more extensive cleansing ritual.
Difference from incense and smudging
Incense and smudge bundles produce smoke, which is not practical or desirable in some spaces. Cleansing water offers the same intention-based cleansing without combustion products. That makes it suitable for shared spaces, offices, hospitals or people who are sensitive to smoke. It works in a different way: where smoke carries the idea of physically driving something out, cleansing water works by spreading scent and plant substances through the space.
